The world’s largest rain forest, Amazon, is key in the fight against global warming. Conservationists have accused Balsonaro of pushing loggers and farmers to clear the forest. Meanwhile, the US agency Nasa reported that the total number of fires in Amazon was slightly lower than average. While more fires are burning in the Amazon and Rodonia, in the federal states of Mato Grosso and Pará the number is lower.
Why is Amazon burning?
Forest fires usually occur during the dry season in Brazil, but are also deliberately set on fire to clear the forest illegally and to provide livestock storage space.
